Synthetic program:

Il corso si propone di fornire agli studenti i concetti di base della corrosione ad umido dei materiali metallici. Saranno affrontati i seguenti argomenti: meccanismo elettrochimico di corrosione a umido; reazioni di corrosione e Legge di Faraday; aspetti termodinamici, aspetti cinetici e legge di Tafel, corrosione uniforme, forme di corrosione localizzata, forme di corrosione in presenza di sforzi esterni. Infine saranno illustrati i metodi di prevenzione e protezione dalla corrosione: la scelta dei materiali, l'uso di rivestimenti, la protezione catodica e l'impiego di inibitori. Ogni tema sarà affrontato con lezioni frontali in aula, esercitazione numeriche e illustrazione di casi pratici. Durante il corso si volgerà un laboratorio pratico per la misura del potenziale e della velocità di corrosione.

Fundamentals of corrosion: electrochemical mechanism, corrosion reactions, corrosion morphology, thermodynamic of corrosion (Pourbaix diagrams), kinetic of corrosion (Evans diagrams), passivation and passivity.
Forms of corrosion: generalized corrosion, galvanic coupling, pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, intergranular corrosion, flow-induced corrosion, environmental induced cracking, hydrogen embrittlement.
Corrosion prevention and protection: cathodic protection and prevention, cathodic protection monitoring, organic and metallic coatings, corrosion inhibitors, anodic protection, materials selection criteria.
Corrosion in natural and industrial environments: corrosion in soil (differential aeration, microbiological induced corrosion, corrosion by stray current), corrosion in waters, corrosion in atmosphere, corrosion in oil and gas industry (sweet and sour service conditions), corrosion in industrial boilers, corrosion of reinforced concrete.
